Is Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil worth it? Who it suits, and who should skip it

By Rowan Hale · 8 October 2026

No.7 Bonding Oil is Olaplex's styling oil: a few drops for shine, softness and smoothness, with heat protection for blow-drying and straightening. This is a research-based guide rather than a hands-on test. It covers what's in it, how to use it and who it's worth it for, using Olaplex's own product information and UK retailers' listings.

What works

  • Very concentrated: Olaplex suggests starting with just two or three drops
  • Olaplex says it protects hair from heat up to 232°C, so it can double as your heat protector
  • Works on damp hair before styling, or on dry hair afterwards for extra shine and smoothness
  • The bottle releases one measured drop each time you tap it, which makes it easy not to overdo it
  • Fits alongside No.3 if you already use Olaplex's repair treatment

Worth knowing

  • Some retailer listings call it silicone-free, but Olaplex's own FAQ says it contains silicones; check the label if you avoid them
  • It's a small bottle, so how long it lasts depends on how much your hair needs
  • Fine hair can look weighed down if you use too much, so start small
  • Olaplex's shine figures come from its own comparisons, not independent tests

Who it's for

It's worth it if you blow-dry or straighten your hair regularly and want one product that protects from heat and leaves hair glossy, especially if it's dry, coloured or frizzy. Skip it if you avoid silicones, or if your hair is very fine and gets greasy easily: a lighter spray may suit you better.

No.7 is a styling oil rather than a treatment. You use it after washing, on damp hair before you blow-dry or on dry hair to finish, and it's designed to leave hair smoother, softer and shinier. Olaplex says it protects hair from heat up to 232°C (450°F), so it can replace a separate heat protector.

The bottle has no pump or dropper. Olaplex's directions are to take off the cap, turn the bottle upside down and tap the bottom with a finger; each tap releases one measured drop. It suggests starting with two or three drops and adding more if your hair needs it. For a smoothing treatment, Olaplex suggests mixing a few drops with its No.6 Bond Smoother in your palms before applying from roots to ends.

Retailers don't all agree on what's in it. Some Amazon listings describe it as silicone-free, but Olaplex's own FAQ says it contains high-grade silicones, which it credits with reducing frizz and adding shine, and the ingredient list on Olaplex's US site starts with dimethicone. Formulas can vary by region, so if you avoid silicones, read the ingredient list on the bottle you receive.

Olaplex reports that hair is noticeably shinier after using it, based on comparisons with bleached hair that hadn't been treated. That's the brand's own testing, so treat the figure as a guide rather than proof.

If you also use No.3, the two fit together: No.3 is the weekly treatment before you shampoo, and No.7 is the everyday styling step. You don't need one to use the other. My Olaplex vs Moroccanoil guide compares No.7 with Moroccanoil Treatment, the other big-name hair oil.

How this page was written: I haven't tested Olaplex No.7 myself. Everything here comes from Olaplex's product information, FAQ and how-to guides, and major UK retailers' listings. If I test it, I'll update this page with a hands-on verdict.

The verdict

No.7 is worth it if you heat-style often and want a single, concentrated product for heat protection, shine and smoothness, and you only need a few drops at a time. If you avoid silicones or have very fine hair, read the label first and start with a drop or two, or choose a lighter product.
