Clinique Moisture Surge 100H is a light, oil-free gel-cream moisturiser and one of Clinique's best-known products. This is a research-based guide rather than a hands-on test. It covers what's in it, how to use it and who it's worth it for, using Clinique's own product information and retailers' listings.

What works

  • A light, oil-free gel-cream that suits people who dislike heavy moisturisers
  • Made with aloe bio-ferment and hyaluronic acid, plus vitamins C and E
  • Fragrance-free and oil-free, according to Clinique and its retailers
  • Works morning and night, under or over make-up, and as a five-minute hydrating mask
  • Sold in several sizes, so you can choose a small jar to try it

Worth knowing

  • Very dry skin may find it too light, at least in winter
  • Clinique's headline claims (a 174% immediate moisture boost and 100 hours of hydration) come from the brand's own testing
  • It's a moisturiser, not a treatment: it hydrates, but it isn't designed to target specific concerns such as blemishes or fine lines

Who it's for

It's worth it if you have normal, combination or oily skin and want a light, fragrance-free moisturiser that doesn't feel greasy, or if you want something to layer over a serum. Skip it if your skin is very dry and needs a richer cream, or if you want a moisturiser that also treats a specific concern.

Moisture Surge 100H is a gel-cream: lighter than a traditional cream but more cushioning than a gel. Clinique built it around aloe bio-ferment and hyaluronic acid, which both help skin hold on to water, with an antioxidant blend of vitamins C and E. Clinique and its retailers list it as fragrance-free and oil-free.

Clinique says it gives skin an immediate 174% moisture boost and keeps it hydrated for 100 hours, which is where the name comes from. Those figures come from the brand's own testing, so treat them as a sign that it's designed for lasting hydration rather than a promise of exactly what you'll see.

Use it morning and night on clean skin. Clinique says it can go under or over make-up, and that it also works as a five-minute mask.

Clinique sells it in several sizes; the link on this page is for the 30ml jar. If you love the texture but need more richness in winter, layer it under a richer night cream. If you want a classic serum to go underneath it, Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair and Clarins Double Serum are both covered on this site.

How this page was written: I haven't tested this moisturiser myself. Everything here comes from Clinique's product information and retailers' listings. If I test it, I'll update this page with a hands-on verdict.

The verdict

For normal, combination or oily skin, it's an easy, reliable moisturiser: light, fragrance-free and comfortable under make-up, with a useful mask trick. If your skin is very dry, or you want your moisturiser to treat a particular concern, there are better places to spend.
